About This Month’s Banner Image: Jail by Carlos Contreras
Congratulations to Carlos Contreras, winner of the Prison Arts Coalition Website Banner Competition! Carlos’s image is displayed on each page of the site and in the Gallery (click here to see the full image). Carlos will also receive a complimentary copy of Inside This Place, Not Of It: Narratives from Women’s Prisons compiled and edited by Robin Levi and Ayelet Waldman.
As Carlos explains:
The banner is about how jail and the prison industrial complex affects families, not just individuals. It is about the chaos created in the world by incarceration and isolation, a real response to a growing problem in our society. I have worked in and around adult inmates for nearly five years now and I see daily the affects incarceration has on them – this piece speaks to that experience.
