Skyler is currently serving a 6 year sentence and is very interested in working to establish an art program for inmates. He has said he, ” would like for inmates to create and share their experiences, hopes, dreams, and positive messages through art, while creating a better future for all.”

The following quotes are from one of his letters to his mom:

“My dream is to be instrumental in creating a program to promote positive changes and choices for inmates through artistic expression.”

“The goal is to inspire and encourage each other on the journey through incarceration to lifestyle choices on the outside by using art as a rehabilitative tool to create a mindset of hope and determination to self-improve.”

Art is therapeutic and, often, the only way some are able to communicate honestly with themselves and others. That was my experience while I was incarcerated. I always encouraged others to draw, write, dance, rap, play instruments, etc…! The possibilities are endless! I didn’t serve my entire sentence because I was eligible for an Earned Release Program and was close to getting kicked out because I was on psych meds that kept me compliant… not necessarily functional. One day out of desperation I took a pile of my drawings to the facilitator to show her I understood what was going but couldn’t participate fully in the discussions and classwork. Needless to say, I’m out early! She saw my frustration in my art and let me have a little more leeway!! It’s important to encourage others to express themselves!!
